Solo Trip: Charleston, South Carolina
Some of the things I love most about exploring a new place on my own, is the ability to take in the atmosphere at my own pace, meet the locals, and enjoy experiences that are on the top of my bucket list. I admit, there are tricky circumstances to traveling solo, but when I finally embrace that the trip is all built around my dream itinerary and without compromise, it makes the trip that much more memorable.
Charleston is the perfect place to get lost in, the streets are rich in history, the southern charm is welcoming, and the food is...well phenomenal. While I encourage everyone to discover the city on their own, below is a break down of recommendations on where to stay, eat, and explore all geared toward the solo traveler.
Where to Stay: The Not-So-Hostel Hostel
While I admit, America does not have the best reputation for their hostels - I give an exception to Charleston's Not-So-Hostel. I highly recommend it! Renovated from a beautiful plantation row home, the hostel is a 15 minute walk from the heart of the city on main King Street. For $28 a night, you can't beat the price given it's location, atmosphere and friendly staff. It also adds a layer of fun when your meeting individuals from all over the world and have a buddy or two to go spend a night on the town with.

Tours: A city so rich in history, it's hard to plainly walk from location to location without gaining the full context of the who, what, where, and why. I suggest joining a walking tour of the city. You learn all about the original "tea party" and the technical start of the revolutionary war, and so much more! And for the spooky loving - I highly recommend a ghost night tour and hear the stories of pirates, corrupt antebellum politicians and more. I recommend using Cooper Walking Tours.
Dishes to Try:
One of the most famous foodie cities in the United States, Charleston takes pride in their southern comfort food infused with modern flare. Pending on your stay, it's almost impossible to sample all the note-worthy dishes. A guide to this is to pick the tops plates at individual places and well as small plates to maximize your stay.
